Five good reasons to read books to preschoolers

Children below 6 are very sensitive to language. During this stage something complex takes place: the development of intelligence, social & emotion, and cognition. In the beginning the ears capture sounds from the environment and the eyes constantly seek where the sound comes from. Much later when he realises that those sounds have meaning he begins to learn that your are expressing feeling through spoken words.

And reading books is one of the most effective ways to reach full developments. For non-reading child we can support this development through activities that stimulates this development.

  • For younger children it helps him become familiar with sounds, words, and language, which gradually builds your child’s literacy skills. The illustrations and word patterns can help him to understand the pattern of language.

  • Reading stories sparks your child’s imaginations. It is different from fantasy, where imagination has reality base and fantasy does not.

  • Books stimulate curiosity. When you read The Hungry Caterpillar, your child will be exposed to several topics such as fruits, life cycle of butterfly, days in a week, and many more. As you read the book more often, curiosity grows naturally within.

  • Reading or telling stories can also be safe ways to explore strong emotions, which can help your child understand change, as well as new or frightening events. Books about going to the dentist or hospital, starting at child care or making new friends will help your child learn about the world around him.

  • Reading to your child also promotes good relationship, laying the groundwork for your child’s future social, communication and interpersonal skills.
